Dover-Foxcroft board backs moving Police Department

DOVER-FOXCROFT — Local selectmen, in a vote of 6-1 on Monday, embraced the concept of a public safety department with police and firefighters working from the same building.

Residents will be asked at the annual June town meeting to approve the relocation of the Police Department from the municipal building to the fire station and to purchase abutting property for the move.

The Dover-Foxcroft Water District has offered its current office space in the rear of the Fire Department building to the town for $35,000. That is the amount that the water company paid to renovate the office space, according to Dover-Foxcroft Town Manager Owen Pratt. In turn, the water company would move to a new location elsewhere in town.

As part of the proposal, selectmen Monday voted to take an option to purchase the former Nancy’s Bakery building and land for $50,000. The house would be demolished to provide parking for firefighters, Pratt said. Police would have parking on the opposite side of the building.

In addition, town officials have proposed moving the property line on a tax-acquired parcel located behind the Fire Department to give the town more land. The remaining tax-acquired land and the building on the lot would then be sold.

Town officials have retained Carpenter Associates of Old Town to draw up a footprint of the proposal and parking, as well as renovation of the building for the Police Department.
