Legionnaires join forces for millennium tribute

BAILEYVILLE — Legionnaires from Washington County and Charlotte County, New Brunswick, will gather at Woodland High School today for a Veterans International Millennium Memorial.

The 12:30 p.m. ceremonies are intended to honor American and Canadian war heroes and celebrate the lengthy friendship between Canadians and Americans, according to Paul Phelan, commander of the Washington County American Legion.

The guest speaker for the event will be Glenn Paye of Newcastle, the second vice commander of the American Legion of Maine.

State, provincial and local legionnaires will also address the gathering, and music will be provided by organist Larry Newman of Woodland and piper James Moffitt of Woodland.

Contributing to the arrangements are Canadian legionnaires Keith Sawyer, Ernest Booth, Robert Sewell, James Stewart, William Gayton and Douglas Dougherty. American legionnaires helping to organize the event are Phelan, Ernest Gott, Jack Perkins, Charles A. Lewis, Rolfe Flood, Richard Carroll, Vaughn Perkins and Phylis Wheaton.

Phelan said today’s memorial will be the first in a series of St. Croix-region border events that both legions plan to sponsor each year.
