2 men rescued after boat sinks off Schoodic Island

WINTER HARBOR — Two mariners were plucked from the ocean Thursday morning after their boat took on water and sank just off Schoodic Island.

Mark Frelong of Southwest Harbor and Bruce Wallace of Ellsworth radioed the Coast Guard at 6:14 a.m. Thursday when their 70-foot fishing boat Terri Lynn began to sink about three miles from Schoodic Island.

The pair were traveling through 8-foot seas and winds of up to 30 mph at the time of the incident, according to a Coast Guard news release.

A Coast Guard search and rescue boat and a Winter Harbor fishing vessel responded to the emergency call. The rescuers found only the bow of the boat breaking through the waves, and later located the two men, who had shot off a red signal flare.

Both men had put on survival suits before the boat sank, helping to prevent hypothermia while in the cold water. They were taken to the Coast Guard station in Southwest Harbor and released in good condition.

A Coast Guard spokesman said Thursday it was not known whether the sunken boat is salvageable, saying the boat would first have to be inspected for damage.
