BANGOR DAILY NEWS (BANGOR, MAINE

Another teen-ager has died. How many friends are going to die in automobile accidents before they all start slowing down? It makes me ill to think such young lives are being taken needlessly. Haven’t they heard of better safe than sorry? Why take risks with speed in an auto that in seconds can be turned into a death machine? Usually it is the driver who survives, having to deal with the fact he or she killed a friend and has put many families in agony. Teens should think of that before they push that pedal to the floor.

It’s not just teens, though. Every day I see people running red lights, acting like they don’t know there’s a yield sign, not stopping for pedestrians in crosswalks, tailgating. Many people are always in such a hurry — a hurry to die? In one day I saw a schoolbus, two old men, an oil truck, three cars with women and children and an ambulance run red lights, an accident because of a person tailgating, and a bad accident resulting in two deaths due to an individual running a stop sign. This is life; we only have one turn at it. Laurie Crane Bangor
