Quality skiing time

A few comments regarding the article that appeared in the Bangor Daily News on Dec. 27.

As noted, American Skiing honored its guarantee for a white Christmas (defined by having at least 70 percent of its terrain open) by issuing discounts and vouchers to reservation holders. It just as easily could have claimed it met its goal and used the press to claim victory in a snowless December.

I spent last Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Sunday River. This was my first time skiing there, spending most of my skiing time at Sugarloaf, Squaw and Vermont resorts. Due to the dearth of snow, I had few expectations for the quantity or the quality of skiing. The skiing was great and there was an impressive number of trails open.

During my three-day stay, I did not hear one person complaib about the conditions or the amount of terrain open. American Skiing probably did not have to offer its guarantee. In my estimation well more than half the mountain was open.

To its credit, Sunday River could have opened more terrain by covering trials with less manmade snow and clearly met their “70 percent guarantee.” This may have made for more skiing but with poorer conditions. This making good on their promise was a fair indication that Les Otten is still in touch with his roots and his Maine values. Brian Hewitt Southwest Harbor
