Nontoxic starch, clay spill in train derailment

GRAY — Officials said no one was injured and nothing toxic was spilled during a train derailment in Gray.

Firefighters got the call at 3 a.m. Monday that 17 cars of a Guilford freight train had derailed. A spokeswoman for the Maine Department of Environmental Protection said all that spilled from the overturned cars was starch and clay.

Neither is toxic, but the department plans to clean up the spilled materials so they don’t get into the nearby Royal River.

The train’s tank cars contained only residual fuel.
