Animal neglect case has history > Official: Dogs mistreated before

DEDHAM — The man whose dogs and birds were found neglected and suffering in the Dedham woods earlier this week has a history of mistreating animals, officials said Friday.

Last winter, Mihail Koxarakis promised to give away his dogs and surrendered his goats, pigs and cows to the state after they were found knee-deep in feces, with improper shelter and inadequate water and feed, according to Dedham animal control officer David Cook.

More than 60 dogs and birds were discovered in similar condition Wednesday at the same location, after a hunter heard a dog crying and stumbled onto the grim scene 4 1/2 miles into the woods. The dogs were the same ones Koxarakis had agreed to give away last year, according to Cook.

Wallowing in their own feces, apparently with little or no bedding, food or water, a number of the dogs were chained to trees, while some of the chickens, ducks, turkeys and pigeons were kept in tiny cages with no room to move around, said Steve Ewer of the Department of Agriculture, Division of Animal Welfare.

Koxarakis, owner of the former Mike’s Pizza in Holden, could not be reached for comment Friday.

The case is still under investigation, according to Ewer, who said the district attorney will decide whether to press charges, and that it would be “at least another week” before a determination is made.

Cruelty to animals could be one charge leveled against the owner, according to Ewer.

The animals are “doing good,” Ewer said. The birds were given to local individuals and the 10 dogs were taken to two area veterinarians for treatment.

Area animal control officers helped remove the animals while the Maine State Police in Orono, Old Town police and the Hancock and Penobscot county sheriffs’ offices helped track down the property owner, Ewer said.
