Calais native honored for Army service

Retired Maj. Gen. Peter T. Berry, a Calais native and graduate of the University of Maine at Machias, has been inducted into the U.S. Army’s Military Police Hall of Fame.

Berry was recognized for almost 34 years of service, during which he achieved the highest rank held by a military police officer.

His career included five years as commanding general of the Army’s Criminal Investigations Command, the Army’s equivalent of the FBI and the Secret Service, with more than 2,500 members stationed nationwide.

“His career was marked by extraordinary contributions and total selfless service to the Military Police Corps, the Army and the nation,” said Brig. Gen. Dan Doherty, commandant of the U.S. Army Military Police School. “His vision, dedication to excellence and great leadership resulted in lasting contributions at a critical juncture in the history of the corps.”

Berry’s wife, Gail, and his son, Christopher, accompanied Berry to the induction ceremony at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri in September.

After graduating from the ROTC program at UMM in 1961, Berry was commissioned as a second lieutenant. He holds a master’s degree from Pennsylvania State University and is a graduate of the Army Command and General Staff College, the Army War College and the FBI Academy.

His awards and decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, three Legions of Merit and two Bronze Stars.

Berry and his wife live in Roque Bluffs.
