HAMPDEN — Police are investigating an accident in which a car struck a Hampden woman as she crossed Route 1A Friday afternoon.
Anne Gemmel, 19, was treated at Eastern Maine Medical Center and released, a nursing supervisor said late Friday night.
Gemmel was crossing Main Road from the Hannibal Hamlin Place parking lot toward the Irving Mainway Store station about 2:15 p.m. when she was struck by a car driven by Rhonda Clark, 36, of Searsport, reported Hampden police Officer Chris Bailey. Clark was driving north toward the intersection of Route 1A and Western Avenue.
Bailey reported that Gemmel was struck as she walked into the second of the two northbound lanes, closest to the Irving store.
Traffic was heavy, he said, and Gemmel apparently found an opening in traffic that had stopped and she moved forward. There was no crosswalk where Gemmel crossed the street.
The accident is being investigated by Bailey and Officer Joel Small and is being reconstructed by Bangor police Detective Cliff Worcester.
