Maine police to get funds to buy bulletproof vests

WASHINGTON — The Bureau of Justice Assistance has authorized $4,000 in grant funding to finance the purchase of bulletproof vests for the Baileyville and Old Town police departments, announced U.S. Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins.

“Law enforcement officers deserve the protection this grant funding ensures,” said Snowe and Collins in a joint statement. “We are pleased that the officers of these police departments, who selflessly give of themselves to our communities, will have this additional line of protection while on duty.”

This grant funding is made possible by the Bulletproof Vest Partnership Grant of 1998, which passed the Senate by unanimous consent and was signed into law by the president on June 16, 1998. Bulletproof vests cost between $250 and $500. Grant funding will supplement local bulletproof vest investments as follows:

Baileyville Police Department — $2,000

Old Town Police Department — $2,000
