Concerning the current debate on public lands: Whereas large landowners do provide public access, such access mainly for the benefit of hunters, fishermen and snowmobilers, for hikers who love the mountaintop experience, the situation leaves much to be desired.

Unlike public lands where mountain trails are maintained for the benefit of the public, several mountain trails on private lands were abandoned years ago when the Maine Forest Service abandoned the use of fire towers. The scenic vistas provided by these mountains has become inaccessible to the public, except the most determined who will bushwhack their way to the top. It is unfortunate such mountain trails have been abandoned altogether. Irvin Dube Madawaska
