$3,000 grant designed to help Union 96 schools

ELLSWORTH — A $3,000 matching grant has been awarded to the Hancock County Friends of the Arts by the Maine Community Foundation.

The grant is designed “improve writing and imaging skills” for students in four Union 96 schools and the Lamoine School. It is funded by the Lila Wallace Reader’s Digest Initiative Fund of the Maine Community Foundation.

The grant will enable the Friends of the Arts to bring poet Martin Steingesser to Hancock County for six weeks in the spring of 1999. He will work with students at Mountainview Middle School for two weeks and spend one week in each of the following schools: Gouldsboro, Winter Harbor, Steuben and Lamoine. Matching funds will come from the Friends of the Arts and from the schools.

For information, visit the foundation’s Web site at www.mainecf.org or call the Ellsworth office at 667-9735.
