FAIRFIELD — Because of high interest, a meeting called to discuss a Massachusetts company’s plan for a tire-chipping plant off Route 23 has been moved, organizers said.
The meeting is scheduled for 5 tonight in the gymnasium of Lawrence High School.
Neighbors of the proposed project by Arthur Schofield Inc. have voiced fears of increased noise and traffic. They also say they worry about lower property values in their quiet, rural neighborhood.
The project, planned for about 5 acres, is awaiting approval from the state Department of Environmental Protection.
ASI hopes to begin chipping tires at the site in the spring for use in paving and construction projects. The facility could handle as many as 2 million tires each year from piles throughout Maine.
Today’s meeting has been called to discuss the project, and representatives from ASI and the DEP have been invited.
Organizers have said they expect more than 100 people from Fairfield and the surrounding communities to attend the informational meeting.
