Baldacci to host computer conference> UM gathering to consider government initiative to develop high-speed Internet

WASHINGTON — U.S. Rep. John Baldacci will host the Next Generation Internet Conference at the University of Maine on Aug. 25. The event will highlight the federal government’s Next Generation Internet initiative to develop a reliable, secure high-speed successor to the existing Internet. The conference will be co-sponsored by the University of Maine and the Maine Science and Technology Foundation.

The NGI initiative is a multiagency federal research and development program that is developing advanced networking technologies and revolutionary applications that require advanced networking, and demonstrating these capabilities on test systems that are 100 to 1,000 times faster end-to-end than today’s Internet.

“The enormous success of the Internet has paradoxically demonstrated that the existing system has inherent limitations that must be overcome if government, business and the public are to realize the full potential of the computer age. The NGI program is helping stimulate the public and private research necessary to create new technologies for the 21st century,” Baldacci commented.

The following federal agencies are expected to participate in the Aug. 25 conference in the Donald P. Corbet Business Building on the Orono campus:

White House Office of Science and Technology Policy;

Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency;

National Aeronautics and Space Administration;

National Institutes of Health;

National Institute of Standards and Technology;

National Science Foundation.

The Next Generation Internet Conference is open to the public and will be held 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the University of Maine’s Donald P. Corbett Business Building. A nominal registration fee includes lunch. Persons wishing to attend should contact Denise Miller at the University of Maine, 581-1506.
