I would like to respond to Cal Thomas’ column in your newspaper on June 26 about the Spice Girls. I’m a fifth-grade student at Helen Hunt School in Old Town. I enjoy music by the Spice Girls and many other groups.
I’m in the Honors Band and a member of the Old Town-Orono YMCA gymnastics team. I think Mr. Thomas’ ideas about children being influenced by any certain musical groups are not quite accurate. If his granddaughter doesn’t like the Spice Girls, that is OK. It is her right and his right to listen to whatever they enjoy. Things that I hear in the Spice Girls’ songs do not make me want to be like them. I just enjoy their music. I also listen to adults, and country music such as “Bubba Shot the Juke Box.” I’ve never wanted to go shoot a juke box. I’ve never actually known an adult who has.
By the way, I don’t own a pair of leopard pants. Ashley Montgomery Milford
