BANGOR DAILY NEWS (BANGOR, MAINE

I am nearly 80. Children in my generation, our parents and our great-grandparents all had access to guns and we never considered taking one to school. We were taught by very strict, intelligent, responsible parents. Today’s generation seems to have no parental discipline. Violence is forced down their throats by TV, the Internet, newspapers, video games and comic books, and the courts do almost nothing about it. They shrug off al the brutal attacks, robberies and murders and send the juveniles to detention until they are 21. Then they put them back on the streets. What is to be expected of children with no guidance? Children grow up by example.

Let the media start the campaign for a change in our society, which is now on greased skids to (a very hot place). Patricia H. Thurston Bass Harbor
