MADAWASKA — State Rep. Douglas J. Ahearne, D-Madawaska, is seeking re-election to the state House of Representatives from District 150 in Aroostook County. Ahearne is running unopposed.
The district comprises Frenchville, Madawaska, Perham, St. Agatha and Westmanland, as well as unorganized territories.
Ahearne said his accomplishments include legislation that permits self-insurers to use a “letter of credit” as security instead of requiring the purchase of a security bond; introduction of legislation banning the hiring of replacement workers during labor negotiations or a strike (vetoed by Gov. Angus King); and passage of a bill requiring abutting landowners on a private road to split the costs of road maintenance and use.
Ahearne also introduced anti-abortion legislation, including a proposed ban on late-term abortions in Maine (defeated in the Senate); parental notification when a minor seeks an abortion; and a 24-hour waiting period before an abortion may be performed.
Ahearne said the following issues should be addressed in the next session of the Legislature: school funding; elder care program funding; a universal health care system; reintroduction of legislation that would ban hiring of replacement workers during labor negotiations or a strike; reintroduction of abortion legislation; and securing adequate funds for road repair in northern Maine.
Ahearne, a resident of Madawaska, has a bachelor’s degree in history from Worcester State College.
