AUGUSTA — A Civil War revolver that once belonged to Maj. Gen. Joshua Chamberlain is going on display at the Maine State Library.
The Colt naval revolver, purported to be the one Chamberlain took from a Confederate officer at the Battle of Gettysburg, will be displayed starting at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
The event will include a lecture by state Rep. William Lemke of Westbrook, author of the recently published, “A Pride of Lions: Joshua Chamberlain and Other Maine Civil War Heroes.”
Lemke is an associate history professor at St. Joseph’s College.
The actions of Chamberlain’s 20th Maine regiment saved the day for the Union at Gettysburg. The general went on to serve four terms as governor and become president of Bowdoin College in Brunswick.
