CARIBOU — Three Aroostook County agencies, working together to boost tourism in the region, have received a $20,000 state grant to finance the agencies’ efforts.

The funds were awarded by the Maine Office of Tourism to Aroostook County Tourism, Northern Maine Development Commission and the Aroostook Association of Chambers of Commerce.

Together with additional funds from the three organizations, private sources and Maine Public Service Co., an $80,000 marketing program will begin.

“Marketing all of Aroostook as a destination has a good chance of success because we are getting the word out about all of our natural and cultural attractions, festivals and retail opportunities,” said Jim Walker, president of Aroostook County Tourism, in a statement. “As a region, we have more to draw visitors, and, in the long run, this will benefit all of our communities.”

Cheryl Boulier, president of the Chamber group, said that the grant will provide an opportunity for the local chambers to promote the region’s resources.

“The proposal shows what can be done when we all work together toward a common goal,” said Robert Clark, executive director at the development commission. “By combining our resources, we were able to build a four-season, multimedia marketing program valued at $80,000 with a $20,000 grant.”

Included in the marketing program are planned advertisements in snowmobile magazines such as “Snow Goer” and “Snowmobile Maine.” Attendance at trade shows in Maine, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New York and New Hampshire also is part of the plan to market the County’s winter recreation.

Summer promotions will include advertising in Maine and New England publications and attending trade shows.

Funding also will be used to reprint an Aroostook four-season brochure and snowmobile trail map.
