Hathaway will be sole owner of Pirates

PORTLAND – Former politician and businessman W. John Hathaway will become the sole owner of the Portland Pirates early this summer, the hockey team announced Tuesday.

Hathaway, a former state lawmaker who ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. Senate, will buy the 35 percent share of the team owned by Pirates president and general manager David Fisher.

Hathaway announced last month that he would buy the 65 percent share of the team held by Joyce Ebright. At the time, Fisher gave no indication that he would sell.

The sale is subject to the approval of the AHL’s Board of Governors.
