Husson men eliminates Knights

AUGUSTA – Husson College advanced to Monday night’s Maine Athletic Conference championships by knocking off the No. 4 University of New England Knights 111-87 on Sunday night.

Men’s basketball

Husson 111, UNE 87

At Augusta, the Husson Braves shot 57 percent from the field and 47 percent (9-for-19) from 3-point range while outrebounding the Knights 45-32.

Giovanni Cotto and Tony Tobin led the way for 21-8 Husson with 20 and 18 points, respectively. Mike McCaffrey scored 15 and Brad Olson added 13. Sean Foye and Chris Funk each had 11.

Ben Nosek paced the 12-13 Knights with 18 points while Aaron McClure had 16, Tyler Lakin and Paul Clark each scored 12, and Rob Cooper totalled 11.

Women’s basketball

UMF 77, UM-Presque Isle 46

At Augusta Sunday night, Rebecca Roak had 11 points and the UMF Beavers shot 51 percent from the field to run away from the UMPI Owls.

UMF went on to defeat Husson 66-50 for the title.

Kristy Parent, Margo Bailey, and Caryn Lasante each scored 10 for the No. 1 Beavers.

Stephanie Huff paced the Owls with 11 points and seven rebounds. Kim Chatman added 11 points.
