Thompson leads Washburn to upset

WASHBURN – Nick Thompson scored 24 points to lead Washburn to a 53-50 upset victory over Van Buren in boys basketball action Friday night.

The Beavers outscored the Crusaders 20-10 in the third quarter to pull ahead.

Tim Gagnon added 12 points in the Beavers’ win.

Nathan Marquis led Van Buren with 17 points, while Kurt Castonguay added 13 and Jesse Cormier netted 12.

At Bucksport, Corey Streams dribbled through three Golden Buck defenders and hit a 3-pointer while falling down, lifting the Minutemen to victory.

Streams’ heroics, coming after a Stearns timeout, nullified a pair of clutch free throws by Bucksport’s Johnny Beck with three seconds remaining. Streams also made an NBA-range 3-pointer at the end of the first half to give the Minutemen of Millinocket a two-point edge.

Streams finished with 25 points.

Cam Giroux paced Bucksport with 22 points and nine rebounds.
