Huff, Young lift UMPI to victory over MMA

PRESQUE ISLE – Stephanie Huff and Michelle Young combined for 23 second-half points Friday night as the University of Maine-Presque Isle erased an eight-point halftime deficit en route to a 59-44 victory over Maine Maritime Academy.

Huff netted a game-high 19 points to go with 16 rebounds for UMPI. Young added 16 points and 13 rebounds, and Heather Von Oesen scored 10 points.

Monica Ratliff led Maine Maritime Academy of Castine with 17 points and Stacey Ryan contributed 15.

Eastern Maine’s Jamie Knights and Kyle Hanscom each scored 14 of their 19 and 20 points, respectively, before intermission. Clark Mills added 13 points.

Phil Appleby drained six 3-pointers en route to a game-high 28 points for New Brunswick Community College of Woodstock. Joel Dickinson threw in 23 points and Andrew Whiteway had 15. Benji Appleby scored 14 points.

At Standish Thursday, Chris Funk netted 18 points and dished out six assists as Husson earned the upset victory over the nation’s No. 21-ranked team in this past week’s NAIA Division II poll.

Brad Olson and Nikos Sompatzis added 16 and 15 points, respectively, for the winners. Giovanni Cotto scored 11 points.

Carl Howell scored a game-high 24 points for St. Joseph’s and Lynn Campbell added 19. Marlow Bernard tossed in 12 points and passed out 10 assists while Mike Fortier had 13 points.
