PORTLAND – Twelve Maine athletes are being recognized as national basketball standouts through their selection as nominees for the 1998 McDonald’s All-American High School Basketball Team. The athletes are: Eric Barkley, Kevin Branswell, Will Morris, Keith Bean and Bobby Smith of Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield; Jesse Carney, Ricky White and Mark Gillbride of Mount Ararat in Topsham; Angelo Salvaggio and B.J. Schuyler of Cheverus in Portland; Tom Waterman of Bangor; and Austin Ganley of Greeley.
The Maine nominees are members of a national group of 1,500 prep basketball standouts, each in the running to be one of the 20 players chosen to the 1998 McDonald’s All-American High School Basketball Team. The final team selections will be announced on Feb. 23 at 7:30 p.m. during a half-hour Selection Show on ESPN2-TV. The game will be played March 25 in Norfold, Va., and it will be broadcast on ESPN-TV.
