Fire official recommends clearing exits, windows

ORONO — An Orono Fire Department official advised residents Thursday to make sure they clear ice and snow from more than one exit at their homes and that they make sure windows are not sealed by ice.

Fire Capt. Lorin LeCleire said removing ice and snow is critical for firefighters and the public they are working to protect.

Doors and windows that can’t be opened could prevent people from escaping in the event of a fire, LeCleire said.

Inaccessible doors and ice-jammed windows might also hinder firefighters’ efforts to rescue people trapped inside burning buildings, extinguish fires and save fire victims’ belongings.
