CALAIS — Hospice volunteers are needed for Down East Hospice, a program of providing care and suport to terminally ill and grieving people throughout Washington County. A training program for prospective hospice volunteers is being planned in the Pembroke-East Machias area, which is accessible to most Washington County residents.
It will involve 30 weekday hours of class time spread out over 10 weeks. Topics covered include terminal illnesses, death and dying, bereavement, communication, family dynamics, spirituality, community resources and advance directives, all taught by qualified professionals.
Hospice volunteers assist individuals and families by providing such services as listening, companionship, respite care, errands, etc. for several hours each week. All volunteers must undergo the training program in order to serve, but graduates are not expected to accept client assignments unless they feel prepared.
Anyone interested in the spring hospice volunteer training program, or who would like additional information, can call either office at 454-7521, Ext. 126; or 255-3356, Ext. 324.
