CARIBOU — A popular local restaurant reopened Wednesday, putting about 55 people back to work, according to Marty Boehmer, the new owner of Yusef’s.
The restaurant is now called Yusef’s — A Boehmer Family Restaurant. Boehmer also owns the Harborside restaurant in Brewer.
The restaurant, which has endured a roller-coaster history, closed earlier this month after creditors took over the property. The previous owner, Joseph Hackett of Caribou, said in broadcast interviews that he had undercapitalized the restaurant’s comeback. He opened the restaurant last May with a $250,000 package backed by county and local development agencies.
“This was a very quiet opening,” said Boehmer, adding that he wanted to work with the staff.
During the past week, Boehmer’s executive chef has been working with the kitchen staff to prepare dishes.
Earlier this week, Boehmer was able to get the required licenses for the restaurant. “The city was fabulous to work with,” he said.
Boehmer also had praise for the Northern Maine Development Commission and the Caribou Development Corp., which helped open the restaurant.
Additions to the menu include the Harborside’s seafood chowder and a fisherman’s platter, according to Boehmer. The restaurant’s fish and meat market also is in operation. Homemade fudge will be available for sale next week, Boehmer said.
