Newport may fix zoning on Route 2

NEWPORT — Changes in Newport’s zoning ordinance will be discussed again when the Planning Board meets at 7 tonight.

For the third time since revised zoning in 1996, the board will discuss a request to make corrections in the ordinance, according to Code Enforcement Officer Fred Hickey.

The move is not unusual, Hickey said Monday.

Tonight’s request would benefit T.W. Clark Construction, formerly Smith Construction, on Route 2. The business was changing hands when the new zoning was adopted, Hickey said. It didn’t become apparent that the zoning did not reflect the current use of the land until the owner made plans to expand the operation.

Under current zoning, the business is considered a nonconforming use in a rural zone. But property across the street is zoned commercial.

Clark could get a variance for expansion, Hickey said, but it is more efficient to change the zone to commercial to reflect the use and be compatible with the zoning across the street.
