McDonald’s outlets receive Smith award

HAMPDEN — Five McDonald’s restaurants owned and operated by Doug and Linda Quagliarioli have won a 1997 Margaret Chase Smith Quality Award for efforts to integrate quality principles into major aspects of the business. It is the first time a Smith award has gone to a restaurant.

The Quagliarolis received the honor for their leadership, strategic planning, focus on customers, information and analysis, human resource development, management and business results.

The couple own and operate McDonald’s restaurants in Belfast, Bucksport, Ellsworth, Machias and Old Town, and employ 330 people.

In order to be considered for the award, the Quagliariolis submitted a 45-page statement outlining their practices and were visited by a team of three judges from the Pine Tree State section of the American Society for Quality.

Other groups receiving Smith awards included Brown and Goldsmith Company, Eagle Industries, Infinity Federal Credit Union, Lewiston Public Works, Neil and Ganter Inc., Shoreline Community Mental Health Services and the town of Houlton.
