Man pleads guilty to sexual assaults> Bucksport resident out on bail; judge orders pre-sentence investigation

ELLSWORTH — A Bucksport man pleaded guilty Monday to repeated sexual assaults of his teen-age daughter from 1989 to 1991.

Raymond E. McAllian, 44, entered his plea to seven counts of Class B gross sexual assault in Hancock County Superior Court. He was released on bail of $10,000, on condition that he have no contact with the victim or her sister.

McAllian decided to plead guilty after lengthy negotiations between his attorney and the prosecution, said Hancock County District Attorney Michael Povich. By pleading guilty, McAllian waived his rights to grand jury review of his case, said Povich.

Judge Andrew Mead ordered a pre-sentence investigation and forensic evaluation, and said McAllian’s next court appearance would be scheduled after those results become available.

The seven counts entered against McAllian in the case represent only a small fraction of the actual number of sexual assaults alleged to have occurred, said Povich.

Now in her 20s, the victim only recently reported the assaults, which occurred when she was between 14 and 16 years old, said Povich. According to the prosecutor, the victim came forward after attending a family gathering, at which her father allegedly assaulted her once more.

Povich noted that in 1987, McAllian pleaded no contest to sexually touching the same daughter, for which he received a 30-day suspended sentence and probation, and was ordered to undergo counseling.

In agreeing with Povich’s request for a pre-sentence investigation of the incidents, defense attorney Elizabeth Ebitz said the case represents a “fairly typical tragedy” occurring in Maine homes.
