Maine women win, tie weekend games

ORONO – The University of Maine women’s hockey team split its weekend games, tying the University of Southern Maine 2-2 in overtime on Sunday and beating Bates College 8-1 in Saturday’s contest.

On Sunday, Maine’s Christina Hedges scored the game-tying goal at 15:54 left in the third period off an assist from Stephanie Gabriele.

Hedges’ goal came less than a minute after Denise Tanguay netted the go-ahead goal for the University of Southern Maine. Tanguay was assisted by Michelle Fernald and Shannon Boyle.

Southern Maine’s Velvet Vachon knotted the game at 1-1 with a goal off an assist from Breanne Fortiguerra.

Amy Oliver recorded 15 saves for Maine, while her counterpart Samantha Whitman stopped 40 shots.

On Saturday, Allison Lorenz scored two goals and assisted on two others.

Alicia Gilmore and Hedges scored three goals apiece for Maine. Jamie Schofield tallied three assists. Gabriele had two assists and Michelle Wheaton and Allison Haley each had one assist. Amy Oliver and Sarah Dolan combined to stop eight of nine shots.

Jess Rolle scored a goal for Bates. Corin Penella and Mandi Swan each had an assist. Cil Bloomfield made 30 saves on 38 shots.

At Auburn, Central Maine Technical College went on a 14-4 run over a 2-minute span, going on to the victory.

Hank McDaniel and Jason Cwiklinski led CMTC with 16 points each. McDaniel also grabbed 14 rebounds. Jason Leclerc added 13 points while Dan Coleman and Dean Boudreau scored 11 apiece.

Ish Gelpi led the Bengals with 18 points. Shaun Tomblin scored 16 points and Tim Farrar added 12.

At Castine Saturday, Stephanie Huff scored the University of Maine-Presque Isle’s first 12 points and finished the game with 26 points and 14 rebounds.

Kim Chatman tossed in 13 of her 17 points in the first half and combined with Huff for 29 of the team’s 35 first-half points.

The Owls relied on strong defense as they controlled the Mariners by outscoring them 35-14 in the second half.

Mary Ratliff led Maine Maritime with 19 points and Lisa Smith had 10.

At Castine Sunday, Amanda Stevens led the University of New England with 18 points.

Stevens scored 10 points in the first half to help ignite the Nor’easters to a 32-27 halftime lead. Wendy Atwood added 12 points.

Vanessa LeBlond paced Maine Maritime with 23 points and 11 rebounds. She hit a baseline jumper that tied the game 34-34 with 14 minutes left in the game. That was as close as Maine Maritime could get to winning as they were outscored 23-12 the rest of the way. Monica Ratliff tossed in 10 points.
