Lewiston couple faces sexual abuse, drug charges> Grand jury indicts Auburn woman also

AUBURN — A Lewiston businessman and a woman he lived with face multiple sex abuse and drug charges after allegedly victimizing a young girl.

In a separate case, an Auburn woman has been charged with engaging in sex acts with four young boys while she was on the staff of the Portland-based Spurwink School.

Indictments in both cases were handed up by an Androscoggin County grand jury Friday.

Walter Lantz, 49, and Peggy Giles, 24, both of Lewiston, were indicted on five counts of gross sexual assault and five counts of aggravated furnishing of marijuana. Police said the two defendants involved a girl who was 12 years old in sexual activity and drug use.

Authorities said the girl alleged that Lantz let her move into his apartment after she quit school in September 1992. Investigators said the girl alleged she had sex with the two defendants numerous times over more than a year.

Police said that the girl had been interviewed in April and that Lantz’s apartment had been searched in May.

The grand jury also indicted Dawn Humason, 26, of Auburn on three counts of gross sexual assault and a charge of unlawful sexual contact.

The charges against the former Spurwink staff member date to alleged activity in 1995.

Police said their investigation began in May 1997 after talks with at least one of the boys.
