Locke Mills man dies in snow sled crash

GREENWOOD — A Locke Mills man was found dead Thursday morning at the scene of a snowmobile accident.

A passer-by found Troy Berryment, 33, near the shore of South Pond. Wardens suspect he was killed around midnight Wednesday, said V. Paul Reynolds, spokesman for the state Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

Berryment and another Locke Mills man, Chris Walker, 24, were riding Wednesday night when Berryment apparently lost control of his sled and hit a tree. Walker, not realizing the other man had crashed, rode home.

Maine wardens said speed was a factor and alcohol was a possible factor in the crash, Reynolds said.

It was the third snowmobile fatality of the 1997-98 season, he said.
