The editorial, “In praise of Band-Aids” (BDN, Jan. 17-18), looks at the problems of the correctional system in a sensitive, meaningful manner. That’s one of the reasons you’ll probably never hear anymore about it. The Maine Youth Center is indeed the one chance we have at reducing the crime statistics in this state. It has had a disgraceful record for many years.
It needs an ample staff properly trained in working with adolescents, with an adequate budget to provide the therapy and education these kids need in order to turn their lives around; while also providing the security needed to keep them safely incarcerated until such time as they can make responsible decisions concerning their own lives.
It is our responsibility as adult Americans to help these kids to become responsible adults. Rev. James A. Merrill Kenduskeag
