Pine pesters Indians

SKOWHEGAN – Kristy Pine scored on a backdoor layup with four seconds left and scored 17 points to lead the Nokomis Warriors of Newport to a 45-44 win over Skowhegan in schoolgirl basketball action Wednesday.

Tonya Cray had 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Warriors.

Wylie Hight scored 16 to pace the Indians.

At Milo, Erin Weston scored nine of her team-high 13 points in the first half as Penquis built a 25-14 halftime lead and held off a Bucksport second-half rally to avenge its only loss.

Penquis won its fifth straight despite going just 5-for-15 from the foul line in the fourth quarter.

Larae Nuite had all seven of her points in the first half for the winners and Erynn Bailey finished with seven. Weston had seven steals.

Christy Grover’s game-high 16 points, Kelly Downes’ nine and Jessica Sawyer’s eight points paced Bucksport.

At Sukee Arena in Winslow, junior center Jared Gordon scored six goals and assisted on two more as the Rams knocked Lawrence from the ranks of the unbeaten.

Adam Violette added three goals for 6-4 Bangor, while David Lisnik scored two goals and assisted on two more. Justin Libby, Mike Deveau, Craig Franck and Scott Wilson tallied single goals, while Scott Wilson handed out two assists. Jason Tuck and Nick Beaulieu combined to make 29 saves on 30 shots.

Josh Richards convered a Caleb Richards feed into the lone goal for 5-1 Lawrence. Jason Poirier, Everett Flannery and Casey Holmes combined to stop 25 of 40 shots for the Bulldogs.
