WISCASSET — Maine Yankee has been removed from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s “watch list” of the nation’s worst-run nuclear power plants.
The agency’s announcement Wednesday said the Wiscasset reactor was taken off the list as a result of last summer’s decision by owners to close the plant permanently.
Maine Yankee had been placed on the list one year ago.
The NRC staff advised the commission that the number of plants on the latest watch list remains at 13. The only unit added to the list was the Clinton plant, operated by Illinois Power Co.
Maine Yankee and the NRC met Wednesday to discuss the plant’s modified security plan. They are scheduled to meet again next Wednesday to consider plans to decontaminate the reactor coolant system and separate the spent pool storage area from other plant systems.
