BANGOR — More domestic passengers used Bangor International Airport last year than ever before, Director Bob Ziegelaar told the city’s airport committee Tuesday.
The total number of domestic passengers in 1997 was 455,000, a 5-percent increase over the previous year. The previous record was 449,000 passengers in 1994.
Ziegelaar also told the committee he expected that, within the next few weeks, there will be additional jet service into Bangor.
Also on Tuesday, the airport committee took a vote that will result in 10 more jobs at Business Express. Councilors on the panel approved the airline’s request to lease 8,000 square feet of space in Hangar 11 at Bangor International Airport, with the right of first refusal on the rest of the building.
Business Express Airlines, which is expanding its maintenance activities at the airport, already leases Hangar 13.
In another matter, the committee authorized Ziegelaar to study the costs of constructing a new hangar at the airport. The director told the committee that a possible corporate tenant would like to have one available this fall — either by building it or by leasing one built by the city.
