I could not believe my eyes when I looked at the front page of the Bangor Daily News on Jan. 16 at a photograph of Vice President Gore visiting the state to view the damage aftermath of the ice storm. There Gore is pulling on a house power service cable and Assistant City Manager Mark Adams of Auburn is moving brush at the same time.
It is a shame that a photo op has to portray a very unsafe act of handling wires on anyone’s part. This is even more disturbing when we all have been well informed by the two major power companies in Maine to never touch lines. I refer particularly to the Central Maine Power advertisement (“Now, more than ever, remember that no line is safe to touch…”), published in the BDN on Jan. 16.
While this was an attempt to show Gore in a helpful manner, it does him a disservice to be portrayed as being unsafe. Dion A. Seymour Holden
