Collision in Frenchville sends 2 men to hospital

FRENCHVILLE — Two men were treated Monday at Northern Maine Medical Center after their vehicles collided on Route 1 in front of Rosette’s Restaurant in Frenchville, according to police and hospital officials.

Allen Chamberland, 37, of Fort Kent, and Brian Gallant, 30, of Old Town, were treated and released, according to a hospital spokesman.

Gallant was driving south on Route 1 in a 1997 Chevrolet utility delivery van owned by New England X-Press of Bangor when a vehicle in front of him slowed to make a right turn into a driveway, according to State Trooper Dana Thibeault.

Because the vehicle’s back lights were covered with dirt from the messy roads, Gallant did not see the brake or the signal lights. Unable to stop in time, Gallant elected to go around the vehicle, said Thibeault. When he did, Gallant collided head-on with Chamberland’s pickup truck, a 1981 Ford, which was traveling in the opposite direction, the trooper said.

The delivery van sustained about $15,000 in damages, and the pickup truck was a total loss, said Thibeault.
