ISLAND FALLS — A Bangor man was injured Sunday morning when the snowmobile he was operating struck a snow-covered rock on Mattawamkeag Lake, according to a game warden.
Mike Bednar, 35, of Bangor was operating a 1997 Ski-Doo at 9 a.m. when he apparently failed to see the rock that created a 2-foot abutment, according to Warden Michelle Hersey.
The warden said cloudy weather may have affected Bednar’s depth perception. In addition, the speed of the snowmobile and the operator’s unfamiliarity with the area may have contributed to the accident.
After striking the rock, the sled and its rider flew about 158 feet before landing. Bednar and the sled continued for another 220 feet before coming to rest, according to the warden.
Bednar was transported to Houlton Regional Hospital where he was reported in stable condition late Sunday.
