BIDDEFORD — The Maine Civil Liberties Union is considering filing a discrimination lawsuit against the city on behalf of a homeless woman.
According to the MCLU, the city may have harassed Diane Fields by taking her posessions and arresting her several times after 15 downtown business owners signed a petition urging that she be taken off the streets.
“It seems there are some constitutional issues,” said Sally Sutton, executive director of the MCLU.
Sutton said the city cannot legally treat Fields differently from other residents, and that she can’t be forced to do anything unless she is a danger to herself or others.
