Ice collapses roof in Etna

ETNA — The roof of a mobile home caved in Wednesday under the weight of ice that formed as a result of Tuesday night’s intermittent rain.

“That rain last night got into the roof and froze up,” said Avis Shaw, owner of the white mobile home on West Enfield Road.

Shaw was at home when the wooden roof over her mobile home’s metal roof gave way under the weight of the ice about 11 a.m.

The incident occurred as family members were on the roof working to remove several inches of ice that had built up, she said Wednesday afternoon.

“It made quite a ruckus,” Shaw said.

No one was hurt. The cave-in caused little obvious damage to the inside of Shaw’s home, though it appeared to have shifted slightly an addition at its front.

The wooden roof, however, had significant damage. Shaw said family members planned to cover it with plastic or a tarp until permanent repairs can be made.

Though Shaw temporarily lost power, her electricity had been restored by Wednesday. Neither her electrical nor telephone service was affected by the cave-in. Shaw said she planned to remain in her home Wednesday night.
