Hawks’ halfcourt game beats Bears

HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Hartford blitzed Maine with a 25-0 first-half run and blasted the Black Bears 92-68 in men’s basketball at The Sports Center on Wednesday night.

The Black Bears led 27-20 with 10:46 to go in the first half, but didn’t score another point for more than eight minutes. By the time they snapped the Hartford flurry, Hartford led 45-27. Corey Thibodeau ended the run with a hoop at the 2:45 mark.

Junior guard Justin Bailey made all 10 of his field goal attempts en route to 22 points for Hartford while senior forward Ryan Howse connected for 21. Anthony Bethune and Keith Bike scored 12 and 11, respectively.

The Hawks took a page from the playbook of Delaware, which hammered the ball at the Bears inside on Saturday and came away with a win. Both Delaware and Hartford resorted to perimeter shooting only on rare occasions: each tried only seven 3-pointers. Hartford connected on two, and Delaware one.

Junior guard Fred Meeks netted 28, including seven 3-pointers, for Maine. Allen Ledbetter notched 10.
