Early goals carry Bangor to victory> Rams score seven in first, top Witches

BANGOR – The Bangor High School Rams hadn’t played since Jan. 3 so they were eager to take the ice against arch-rival Brewer at Sawyer Arena Wednesday night.

“We came out flying,” said junior center Jared Gordon, who had two goals and two assists as the Rams thoroughly dominated all aspects of the game en route to a 9-1 triumph.

Bangor scored seven goals in the first period to put the game away.

“Bangor has a good team. I can see how they beat Waterville,” said Brewer coach Tim Kilroy. “And we’re down in talent right now.”

Bangor improved its record to 4-3 while Brewer fell to 1-8.

Gordon’s linemate, junior right wing Mike Deveau, had his first high school hat trick and also had a pair of assists. Freshman left wing Justin Libbey had a pair of goals with Craig Franck and Stuart Cooper notching the other goals.

“Mike [Deveau] has his own little spot in front of the net. He’s a tough cookie,” said Bangor coach Bill Schwarz.

“It’s nice,” said the soft-spoken Deveau about his hat trick.

Libbey got the game’s first two goals 2:58 apart early in the first period to trigger the uprising. Franck, Deveau and Cooper scored within a span of 42 seconds to make it 5-0 before Deveau and Gordon capped the flurry with goals one minute apart.

Bangor’s last five goals came within a span of 4:05.

Josh Schwartz’s second-period wraparound was Brewer’s only goal off Ram goalie Jason Tuck, who wasn’t tested often but turned in a steady performance.

Libbey opened the scoring at the 1:42 mark after Andy Sumner had won a face-off and gotten off a quick shot.

“I fanned [on the rebound] and Justin put it in,” said Sumner.

Libbey swept a 10-footer behind Witch goalie Patrick Cowan.

He scored his second goal off another Sumner rebound.

Sumner had made a nice move at the blue line to beat a Witch defenseman and break in alone. Cowan stopped Sumner’s shot with his pad but Libbey roofed the rebound.

Franck scored with a screened slap shot from the midpoint; Deveau slid a Gordon feed back inside the far post to Cowan’s right; Cooper pounced on a loose puck and snapped a quick wrist shot through Cowan’s pads; Deveau tipped Tom Carey’s slap shot over Cowan’s shoulder and Gordon converted a perfect feed from Lisnik by tucking the puck in the short side.

Schwartz made it 7-1 with a nifty move behind the net but Gordon answered with a rising slap shot over Cowan’s glove in the second period.

Deveau completed his hat trick with 1:29 left by snapping a Lisnik feed over Cowan’s glove.
