Cars, trucks slide into chain reaction> Wind, ice blamed for Pittsfield accidents

PITTSFIELD — Wind-whipped roads caused a chain reaction of accidents Wednesday in the northbound lane of Interstate 95 in Pittsfield.

According to Maine State Trooper Chris Carr, at least three cars and one tractor-trailer truck slipped, slid and bumped into each other at 11 a.m. just north of Pittsfield.

No one was injured in the original accidents, but the chain reaction caused another tractor-trailer driver to slow his rig to avoid crashing. That truck, owned by D.N. Truck Lines of Chapman and driven by Robert Arsenault, 45, of Houlton, was struck from behind by a car driven by Tiffany Young, 22, of Newport. Young’s 1990 Pontiac spun around in the roadway and the rear of her car collided with the rear of the tractor-trailer.

According to Carr, Young’s 3-year-old daughter was taken to Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield for observation. She received a bump on her head. Both Young and Arsenault were wearing seat belts, and the child was secured in a child safety seat, Carr said.

The accidents caused I-95 to be closed down for about 15 minutes while wreckers pulled the vehicles back on the road. In one case, one truck ended up facing in the wrong direction.

No others were injured, said Carr, and no charges will be filed. Maine State Trooper Mark Brooks investigated the original accidents.

Carr also investigated an accident on Route 2 in Palmyra about 10:15 a.m. He said a 1994 Toyota, operated by Tamara Harriman, 28, of St. Albans, was headed east on Route 2 when icy conditions caused Harriman to lose control. The car slid into the path of an oncoming car driven by Timothy Flickinger, 32, of Palmyra. Flickinger was driving a 1987 Subaru that was struck on the rear driver’s side.

Harriman and her son, Jesse, 3, were uninjured. Flickinger was taken to Sebasticook Valley Hospital by Hartland-St. Albans Ambulance for treatment of head and neck pain. His passenger, Constantinha Charron, 32, was not injured.

Carr said all three adults were wearing seat belts, and the child was secured in a child safety seat.
