Regional EPA offers free site assessment

BOSTON — The New England Office of the Environmental Protection Agency is offering free site assessments to municipalities and other entities interested in redeveloping abandoned, contaminated properties.

Under the agency’s Brownfields program, environmental consultants contracted by the EPA will perform the assessments — valued at up to $50,000 — to determine the nature and extent of contamination, and to estimate costs of cleaning up a site for redevelopment.

To qualify for the assessments, the property must be contaminated or there must be a strong suspicion it is contaminated.
