Property tax relief forms must be filed by Jan. 31

AUGUSTA — Maine residents who may be eligible for the Maine Residents Property Tax Relief Program must file applications by Jan. 31.

The circuit breaker program resulted in refunds to 43,000 Maine residents last year, and more funding for this year’s program should result in an increase in the number of refunds.

Guidelines for eligibility are that a taxpayer be a Maine resident who lived in Maine during all of 1997 with a household income of less than $40,000, or individual income less than $25,700, and whose property tax was more than 4 percent of income. For those renting, the rent paid must be greater than 33 percent of income.
