Everyone knows politics is a dirty business. Bending, shaving, coloring and flat-out abusing the truth is the stock and trade of politicians. You would think an organization that calls its self the Christian Civic League would have inhibitions that would keep it above the muck. Wrong. The league has shown it is willing to dive into the cesspool head first.
By calling its anti-civil rights campaign “Vote Yes for Equal Rights” it is attempting to pull off a political dirty trick that would have the likes of Richard Nixon and Richard Daily smiling down (or far more likely, up) at them.
By popular vote, and again by an overwhelming vote by the Legislature, the people of Maine have said that denying the extension of civil rights to gays and lesbians is unacceptable. The Christian Civic League is attempting to hijack that sentiment by this blatently misleading slogan.
I’m certain Mike Heath and his lieutenants have an Orwellian Newspeak defense of their choice of this phrase. Don’t let them get away with it. On Feb. 10 go to the polls and vote against discrimination and campaign shenanigans. Norman Mrozicki Surry
