ORONO — A large sheet of ice which slid off the roof of the University of Maine field house Tuesday caused thousands of dollars in damage to three parked vehicles.
No one was injured, but all three vehicles had heavy damage.
According to UM spokesman Joe Carr, the ice sheet landed on three vehicles parked on the north side of the sports facility about 1 p.m.
The vehicle hardest hit by the ice was damaged to the tune of $4,000, an estimate which includes a broken windshield, Carr said. One of the vehicles is owned by the university, and the other two belong to UM employees, he said.
Classes, which originally were scheduled to start Monday, won’t begin until Thursday, though the university’s 2,200 employees reported to work Tuesday, Carr said.
Students have been advised not to return to campus until late Wednesday afternoon. But an estimated 400 students had returned by Tuesday for lack of an alternate place to stay.
