Snowe urges study review on mixed-gender training

WASHINGTON — Sen. Olympia J. Snowe has urged the Department of Defense to release for congressional review a study on military gender-integrated training programs provided last month to the Department of Defense by the Defense Advisory Commission on Women in the Services.

The report was transmitted to the department shortly before a similar report by the Federal Advisory Committee on Gender-Integrated Training and Related Issues.

In a letter to the Deputy Secretary of Defense John Hamre, Snowe said she is concerned that the Department of Defense had not yet made the report available for scrutiny by either the public or the armed services.

DACOWITS was created in 1951 by Secretary of Defense George Marshall as a permanent body to guide senior Pentagon leadership on how women in uniform can most effectively contribute to the operations of the armed services.
